What "resin washed stone" means
"Resin washed stone" is a common way of describing the stone used in a resin bound surface. It isn't a separate product type. It simply means natural aggregate that has been washed and graded so it is clean, consistently sized and ready to be coated in resin.
In a resin bound surface, that stone is mixed with a clear resin binder until every particle is coated, then spread and hand-trowelled into a smooth, seamless finish. The stone gives the surface its colour and texture, while the resin locks it together. Is resin washed stone ready mixed?
No. Vuba Stone and Vuba resin are supplied as a matched system and mixed on site, not pre-mixed. Resin bound mix has a limited working time once the resin components are combined, so it needs to be mixed in batches, usually in a forced-action mixer, and laid straight away while the edge is still wet.
That's why the stone arrives dry and separate from the resin. You or your installer combine the resin components, add the kiln-dried stone and mix until every stone is fully coated, then lay it. Our step-by-step guide on how to lay resin bound explains the process in more detail.
Why kiln-dried and graded stone matters
Moisture is the enemy of a good resin bond. Damp stone can stop the resin curing properly and lead to a weak or cloudy finish, which is why Vuba Stone blends are kiln-dried rather than simply washed and air-dried. Dry stone lets the resin grip each particle the way it's designed to.
Grading matters too. Stone that is consistently sized packs together evenly, trowels to a smoother finish and gives a predictable result from one batch to the next. Most driveways use a 6mm aggregate at 18mm laid depth for vehicle traffic, which is the combination our Perth driveway page describes.

The amount of stone and resin depends on the area you're covering and the laid depth, and the right depth depends on how the surface will be used and what it's going over. Because of that, we don't publish a one-size-fits-all coverage figure here.
